  • Methodist Prayer Competition

Thu 28 Nov 2019 Mrs Grimshaw

On Wednesday(27th Nov), Mrs Grimshaw led an assembly to launch the Methodist Prayer Handbook competition.

The theme for the forthcoming Handbook is ‘The Earth is the Lord’s’ (Psalm 24:1).

The television series ‘Blue Planet II’ highlighted the way human activities are having a major effect on the life systems of our world. Climate change, species extinction, polar ice loss, sea level rise, land and air pollution and waste disposal are all traced back to aspects of our choices. Tragically, those most affected are the poor who have contributed least to the problem.

The Methodist Prayer book have also said they would also welcome prayers for the general pages at the front of the Handbook on the following themes: the comforting presence of God, justice, adoration and thanksgiving, confession, times of life, times of day, and the glory of creation.

Prayers should not exceed 120 words or 12 lines.

When submitting prayers, please give your full name and class name. These can be emailed through to office@thevine.cambs.sch.uk or handwritten copies to Mrs Grimshaw.

The deadline for submission is 31 January 2020

    Good luck!

  • Garden Club visit from the Wildlife trust

Wed 27 Nov 2019 Mrs Bell

During Garden Club at Golden time this term we met Mr Lee from the Wildlife trust.  We have been learning about how we can use natural products in the garden which are biodegradeable and Mr Lee brought along some Hazel poles and Willow rods harvested from managed woodland at Hardwick Wood.  We were interested to learn that Hardwick Wood was listed in the Domesday book and has supported a rich variety of wildlife through the centuries.

Mr Lee demonstrated the use of a Billhook to sharpen the Hazel rods.  We will use them to repair the fence in Maria’s meadow.  We discussed the coppicing of native trees and the use of these products for fences and structures in the garden.  We have also been learning about British wildflowers and Mr Lee advised us on foodplants for butterflies in our area such as the Holly Blue butterfly.  We are hoping to work with the Wildlife trust to continue to increase the diversity of grasses and flowers in our meadow.

Mr Lee was very impressed with the knowledge of our pupils and helped to answer some tricky questions about reducing our carbon footprint.

This term we have been practising some new willow weaving techniques, making winter flowering displays for the school grounds and maintaining Tucker’s Orchard.

Garden Club is open to all pupils in years 3 to 6 during Golden time on a Friday afternoon.

  • The Houses of Parliament

Tue 26 Nov 2019 Hannah Bennett
Today in Year 1 we have been learning about what the Houses of Parliament are used for. We pretended to be Members of Parliament, the Prime Minister and the Speaker. We voted to find out if we should always have apples as a snack. The result was yes!

  • Anti-Bullying Week

Mon 11 Nov 2019 Cathy Manning

This week is national Anti-Bullying Week and the theme this year is 'Change starts with us'.  We have been thinking about how small changes by everyone can make a big difference and make our school a safe and happy community to be in. This reminds us of our school prayer which says: Let us remember that as many hands build a house, so many hearts create a school. During the week everyone will be writing a personal pledge of what they will do to make a difference.

This afternoon pupils in KS2 watched the Anti-Bullying Show which was based on Tolkien's 'The Hobbit'.  The show highlighted that bullying comes in different forms including indirect and online.  It was an entertaining afternoon which also explored strategies for responding to bullying if it occurs, as well as how we can all help to prevent it.
