  • Spring has sprung!

Fri 29 Mar 2019 Mrs Richardson

Spring has sprung in Year 1 this week!

We wandered the school grounds in search of signs of spring. It felt good to be outside with the sun shining and not needing our coats.  We all agreed the blossom and spring flowers made us feel cheerful.  We were inspired by the beauty of what we saw to paint blossom for our Mothering Sunday cards.

This week we have begun to create our own textile pictures of Jack and the Beanstalk. We have been practising joining fabric in different ways including by stitching. We were really lucky to have Sheila and Marit from the Cambourne Crafty Ladies come and help us.

  • The Blues and Roots Ensemble

    Fri 15 Mar 2019 A Foster

On Wednesday 6th March, The Vine had a very exciting and inspiring visit from The Blues and Roots ensemble, a group of jazz musicians. Their music is inspired by Charles Mingus (1922 – 1979), a very talented, American jazz performer and composer.

The Blues and Roots ensemble first performed an incredible concert to KS2 in the hall. We enjoyed listening to a range of jazz music and learning about the history of this style of music. Year 5 then engaged in workshops with the musicians where they explored the music further and even composed their own jazz piece.

We thoroughly enjoyed the morning! Here are some comments from the children:

“I liked how they played different music from all around America,” Chloe (Y4).

“They were an amazing band!” Evie (Y4).

“It made me want to sing and dance,” Beau (Y3).

“I liked the mixture of the double bass with all the instruments playing together. The blues ensemble payed in unison,” Tegan (Y3).

    “It was remarkable!” Arvids (Y3).

  • International Womens Day – March 8th 2019 #BalanceforBetter

    Wed 13 Mar 2019

Last Friday we celebrated International Womens Day.

KS2 pupils enjoyed talks from Inspirational Women in the Community. Huge thanks for coming in and sharing your time.

Year 3 listened to stories about working at the BBC and working in recruitment.

    The children loved it!

Charlotte – “It was interesting to find out what they did before coming to the Vine.”

Izzy – “I was surprised to find out that Mrs S produced TV shows.”

Christos – “I liked how Mrs B used to help people to find their jobs, it was inspiring.”

Gyaan – “It inspired me, I want to do what they did when I grow up.”

Mrs Hayward talked to year 4 about working in banking and finance before her life as a teacher

The Year 4 pupils loved it! Thank you.

Year 5 learnt about life as a scientist, and the exciting role played in Industry. Fabulous insight to the working world.

Lisa who works for the Foreign Office talked to year 6.

The children were engaged and listened carefully to what Lisa had to say, focussing on various steps in her career and were impressed by who she has met and buildings she's been in along the way. This was noticeable by the many questions which came up asking her about her favourite job, various aspects of trade and many on Brexit. Lisa clearly gave the children a greater understanding of her roles and of Brexit which was great to see them wanting further knowledge on a topical issue. A great success all round meaning the talk went on for nearly an hour only stopped due to Golden time; but I'm sure some would've been more than happy carry on the discussion.

In school we had some fun with a quiz guessing which members of staff owned their fascinating facts…..

Who…..Did a tandem parachute jump from 14,000 feet with the British Army in Germany?

Who has ……Dived off The Barrier Reef?

    Who is a……Civil Engineer?

Who is a…… Qualified Scuba Diving Instructor?

  • Year 3 - The Great Wave

    Tue 12 Mar 2019 A.Foster

In Year 3, we have been learning about Extreme Earth - Volcanoes, Earthquakes and Tsunamis. As part of our learning, we studied the Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai who was known for his painting ‘The Great Wave Off Kanagawa’. Year 3 had a go at recreating this famous painting using mixed media!

After studying ‘The Great Wave off Kanagawa’, we learnt that Hokusai painted in layers, therefore we decided to do the same.

Firstly, we mixed red and yellow paint to make orange for the sky.

Secondly, we used white paint to create the ash cloud, slowly mixing in black paint to create a gradient to dark grey.

Thirdly, we painted the sea. We mixed 4 different shades of blue to create tone and added tissue paper to create texture. We then used the same techniques to paint the great wave.

After that, we used the darkest blue shade to paint Mount Fiji in the background.

Finally, we mixed white paint with flour and sea salt to add the spray to the sea and wave.

To go with our paintings, we also researched the artist Katsushika Hokusai and wrote his biography. We learnt so much about the artist through doing this. Did you know that Hokusai moved house 93 times because he hated cleaning? When his house got too dirty, he would simply move rather than clean.

Year 3 are very proud of their learning and hope that you like it too!
