Reading

At The Vine, we believe that confident, fluent reading opens the door to learning across the curriculum and empowers pupils to live the fullness of life that God intends. We are committed to ensuring that all pupils engage with and enjoy a wide range of texts throughout their primary years.

Guided Reading

Once pupils have completed the Read Write Inc. Phonics programme, they take part in three whole-class Guided Reading sessions each week. Across all year groups, pupils study a carefully chosen range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry texts.

Each Guided Reading session is structured around three key elements:

  • Vocabulary development
Key vocabulary from the text is introduced and discussed before reading. Time is given to explore word meanings, as well as their etymology and morphology, to deepen understanding and support language development.
  • Shared reading
Texts are read together as a class, with teachers modelling fluent, expressive reading. A clicker is used to signal unison reading, and individual pupils are also invited to read sections aloud to develop confidence and fluency.
  • Comprehension and understanding
Pupils demonstrate their understanding by responding to a range of questions based on VIPERS (Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explain, Retrieval and Summarise), enabling them to explore texts in depth and develop strong comprehension skills.

Accelerated Reader

In Key Stage Two, we use Accelerated Reader to ensure pupils are choosing books which align with their current reading ability. Pupils complete a termly Star Test, which assesses their reading skills, comprehension and vocabulary. From this, each pupil is given a personalised book level range linked to their current reading age.

Pupils select books within their range to read both in school and at home. After finishing a book, they complete an online quiz to demonstrate their understanding. This approach supports progress, builds confidence and encourages pupils to take responsibility for their reading choices.

Six Book Challenge

The Vine 6 Book Challenge is a reading initiative to open the door to different worlds through reading and sharing books. Enjoying reading is an important part of life and we want our pupils to get lost amongst the words of a good story, poem or non-fiction book.

Every year, the pupils are challenged to read six exciting books. Each book has been carefully selected to not only engage and spread a love of reading, but to broaden pupils’ horizons by developing their knowledge, empathy and understanding of the world. Once a book has been completed, pupils return it to school along a written book review (on a given template). When they have read all the books for their year group, pupils are awarded a badge to wear proudly on their sweatshirt.
