Intent

At The Vine, we believe that strong literacy skills are the foundation for learning across the curriculum and for life beyond the classroom. Our English curriculum is designed to develop confident readers, skilled writers and articulate speakers who enjoy using language to explore, communicate and create.

We aim to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop a love of reading and access a wide range of high-quality texts;
  • write clearly and creatively for different purposes and audiences; and
  • build a rich vocabulary and the confidence to express ideas in speech and writing.

Our curriculum is inclusive and ambitious, supporting all learners to make strong progress from their starting points and achieve their full potential.

Implementation

English is taught daily and carefully structured to ensure clear progression from the Early Years through to Year 6.

  • Reading is at the heart of our curriculum. Pupils develop secure early reading skills, fluency and comprehension through systematic phonics teaching, whole class guided reading and frequent opportunities to read independently from a wide range of high-quality texts.
  • Writing is taught through engaging, structured units that provide opportunities to write across a range of genres and text types. Pupils are taught to plan, draft, edit and improve their work, developing technical accuracy, fluency and creativity.
  • Vocabulary and spoken language are explicitly taught and embedded across lessons through discussion, storytelling and drama.
  • Spelling, grammar and punctuation are taught systematically and applied within meaningful writing tasks.
  • Inclusive teaching strategies ensure all pupils can access learning, with targeted support and challenge where needed.
  • Assessment and feedback are used to identify progress, address gaps and inform next steps in learning.

Through consistent teaching, high expectations and engaging learning experiences, pupils build the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to succeed in English.

Impact

The impact of our English curriculum is seen in the confidence, enjoyment and progress our pupils demonstrate in reading, writing and speaking.

Children develop a love of reading and become fluent, confident readers who can understand and discuss a wide range of texts. They write with increasing accuracy, creativity and purpose, using a rich vocabulary and applying spelling, grammar and punctuation skills effectively. Through regular opportunities to talk, perform and express their ideas and opinions, pupils become articulate communicators who can express ideas clearly and listen thoughtfully to others.

By the time all pupils leave our school, they are confident readers, capable writers and effective speakers, equipped with the essential literacy skills they need for lifelong learning.

This is our school – every pupil is given opportunities to be challenged in English through quality first teaching, scaffolded and differentiated learning.

Let peace dwell here - Pupils show goodness by make the right choices to be ready for learning and develop the self-control to think before speaking and rehearse sentences in their heads before writing. They are given time and space to be peaceful: they think calmly, partake in quiet reading and writing and reflect on their learning.

Let the rooms be full of contentment – Learning is progressive, skills are taught and knowledge is gained. This requires pupils to be hard working and patient to be able to fully master reading and writing.

Let love abide here – Pupils engage with meaningful learning to foster curiosity and love for English.

Love of one another, Love of mankind – Pupils will be treated individually and given opportunities to experience, understand and be tolerant of those of different faiths and beliefs, through quality texts and carefully chosen, thought provoking topics.

Love of life itself and love of God – Pupils embrace challenging learning with a positive outlook; they are helped to have faith in themselves and see the joy that learning brings.

So many hearts create a school – Pupils are offered rich, varied and diverse opportunities to challenge every pupil when speaking, listening, reading and writing which draw upon meaningful, real-life experiences.

Spiritual and cultural - Pupils will experience awe, wonder and excitement, through listening to and reading a diverse and wide selection of texts.

Tolerance – Pupils are given opportunities to experience, understand and be tolerant of those of different faiths and beliefs.

Moral - Pupils will understand and learn how to write for different purposes and audiences.

Rule of Law – Pupils know that there are rules and expectations that have to be followed.

Individual Liberty – Pupils know that they can make independent, informed choices within the parameters of the laws.

Social - Pupils will develop the skills to be able to work with a partner, in a group or class in both reading, writing and speaking and listening tasks.

Mutual Respect – Pupils understand that they can express their views and listen to the views of others.

Cultural – Pupils will encounter culturally diverse planning and resources and be able to make cross curricular links. 

Democracy – Pupils are given opportunities to have a say, ask big questions and be engaged in topics which they want to learn.
