Years 3, 4 and 5 Summative Assessment



Formative assessment takes place every day, it is the process of moving each pupil onto their own 'next step.'  Formative assessment can often take the form of a conversation about the learning, a discussion that allows both teacher and learner to deepen their understanding.  Formative assessment is also clearly seen in The Vine School's approach to marking and feedback.  Staff take a great deal of time and trouble to identify both STARS (areas of strength) and TARGETS (next steps for improvement).  Pupils are encouraged to respond to their STARS and TARGETS and opportunities are given for them to identify their own next steps using shared success criteria.


Summmative assessment takes place regularly with weekly spellings and times tables tests.  In addition we use a range of other tests throughout the year to check pupils' understanding of key concepts as well as to prepare them for formal testing in the future.


At the end of the school year, teachers will use their professional judgement drawn from a range of sources (observations, learning in books, pupils discussions etc as well as tests) to assess if pupils are working at one of the following performance descriptors for Reading, Writing and Mathematics:

  • Working AT the expected standard
  • Working TOWARDS the expected standard
  • Working at GREATER DEPTH within the expected standard

Teachers will use the statements in the  assessment framework 2016 to assess the standard each pupil is working at. It is important to note that this is a coverage and mastery curriculum, so pupils must meet all of the statements to be assessed at a particular standard.
